Biohackers Season 3! Hackerspaces have always been about making things. From building your own computers to creating your own designs. There’s bound to be something in a hackerspace that interests you. But what if you want to make something a lot more than just your own idea? What if you want to build something that can actually change the world? That’s the Third Season of hackerspaces, and while it might not have quite the same impact as the first two. It’s here to make sure that you have the resources you need no matter what. The Third Season of hackerspaces has come and gone. Leaving many of its members in tears and others wondering what just happened. But while the Second Season left many wondering where it went. The third Season is here to restore our faith in the gift of hacker culture. This article is a part of that journey. And we hope it inspires you to take action in your own life and in the life of your community.
What is the Third Season of hackerspaces?
The Third Season of hackerspaces was a period of rapid growth and activity that ran from late 2017 to mid-2019. During the Second Season, most of the work was done by the members of the Southeast Hobbies and Scratch group, who organized the Hack the World Hackathon in October 2017. The key staff members were all from Hobbies and Scratch and after the event, most of them remained to help organize and train their original colleagues from Southeast Hobbies and Scratch. The Third Season was the period when we welcomed almost all of the new members and welcomed our first scientists, engineers, and technicians. It’s also the season when we saw many of the old members come back after a long break. This new members also proved to be very flexible and open-minded, which made the Third Season even more exciting and diverse.
What did we learn from the Second Season?
The Second Season of hackerspaces was all about the culture, the people, and the events. The Third Season is all about the resources, and while the organization and culture still matter, the focus of the Season is on what we have and what we can do with it. In other words, the Second Season was about building new things, the Third Season is about building memories, and making new friends. This has been a great season for hackerspaces and we are thankful for the friends that have been made and the resources that we have been given.
Check out our new resources for winter 2018-19: XTC and We Need Diverse Engineers
The XTC and We Need Diverse Engineers (WNDE) are great new resources that were released at the same time as the Hack the World Hackathon. WNDE is a challenge that is intended to spark innovation across the engineering and design spectrum. XTC is a brand new members-only club that was created to support the XTC challenge. Both clubs have been very useful during the season and have helped us to solidify the fact that we have a lot to offer and are ready for something bigger and better.
Let’s work together to build a better world!
During the Third Season, we saw many amazing projects developed by members of the community. But what do we get out of all this? After all, hackerspaces are great places to make things and do scientific research, but what happens when the work is done and the result is stored in a physical space? These are the things that the Let’s Work Together project is all about. Let’s Work Together is a new service that brings together members of different hackerspaces in a single Dedicated Dedicated room. The idea is to work together on projects, learn new skills, and have fun. Let’s Work Together will have a team building competition where teams will have to create a unique and working piece of equipment that “works together.” This is a great way to get members of different hackerspaces working together toward a common goal. Let’s work together to build a better world!
How to get involved in the Third Season of hackerspaces
If you’re interested in helping to shape the future of hackerspaces, we encourage you to get involved in any of the projects listed below. Each project is meant to be a springboard for community members to get involved in more deeply. If you’re interested in working on a student project, check out the Student Projects section below. If you’re looking for a more involved project, the Marine Biology and Ecology group works on the Seagrass Eco-Lab, which is a hands-on project that changes the way that we see and interact with the environment around us.

The Hobbies and Scratch group hosts a weekly meetup at the Old Town Metropolitian in Southeast Hobbies and Scratch is hosting a special meetup to celebrate the release of their first track. The Southeast Hobbies and Scratch group hosts a monthly event called Patient Zero. Check out South Florida Scratch and let loose at Space Coast Scratch.
